Drills need to have clear goals, scenarios and metrics. Common scenarios include single node failure, disk damage, entire computer room unavailability, and data damage rollback. Each exercise should record RTO/RPO, failure points and improvement items.

Prepare recovery scripts, permission lists, and communication processes to ensure team roles are clear (who triggers, who recovers, who verifies). Simulate in a non-production environment in advance to avoid affecting online business.

Follow the real process during execution: trigger a fault, gradually recover according to the recovery manual, verify data consistency and business availability, and record time-consuming and abnormal situations.

After completion, a drill report should be produced, listing a list of problems, root cause analysis and improvement plans, and regular regression to verify that the improvement measures have taken effect.

Balancing the three requires first conducting a risk assessment: identifying key businesses, affordable RTO/RPO and budget ceiling. Allocate resources based on risk results. For example, critical systems use high availability, multiple copies, and off-site backups; secondary systems use less frequent backups.

You can use tiered storage (high-performance disks for hot data, cheap object storage for cold data), incremental backup, compression and deduplication to reduce storage costs, and automatically archive old backups in combination with life cycle policies.

Encryption (at rest and in transit), access control, audit logs and regular security scans must be included in the backup and recovery plan. These are the basis for ensuring the credibility of the recovered data.

Prefer vendors that provide clear backup SLAs, support multiple recovery mechanisms, allow for drills, and have good monitoring and logging. Be sure to spell out backup responsibilities, data retention and availability terms in your contract.
